Biography
Dr. Lorrie A. Kirshenbaum is Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (ICS) at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre, Canada Research Chair in Molecular Cardiology, Professor and Division Head of Cardiovascular Science and Disease, Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba
A major focus of Dr. Kirshenbaum’s laboratory is directed toward understanding the molecular pathways that underlie sex specific difference in heart failure. Dr. Kirshenbaum is investigating how certain anti-cancer drugs damage the heart muscle resulting in heart failure in cancer patients. In addition, Dr. Kirshenbaum is also investigating how disruption of the normal circadian rhythm such seen in shift workers influences cardiac disease progression differentially in females versus males. Dr. Kirshenbaum’s is one of the earlier pioneers of the cardiac cell death field with major contributions that include discovery the roles of Bcl-2 family proteins in the pathogenesis of heart failure after myocardial infarction (heart attack).
Dr. Kirshenbaum is internationally recognized for his pioneering work and has published research articles in prestigious high profile journals, such as Nature Medicine, Nature Cancer, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Circulation as well as text book chapters, and edited several books. Dr. Kirshenbaum has received several prestigious honors and awards for his research achievements by the International Society for Heart Research, International Academy of Cardiovascular Scientists, Canadian Cardiovascular Society American Heart Association and other organizations.
Dr. Kirshenbaum serves on many high profiles journal editorial boards and international committees, as well as national and international peer review grant panels including Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, American Heart Association and has served as the chair of the National Institute of Health and Centre for Scientific Advancement Study Section in the United States. Dr. Kirshenbaum is the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology.
