Biography
Shyla Gupta is a medical student at the University of Ottawa. She recently completed a 3-year bachelor degree at Queen’s University studying health sciences.
As an Indian female and the Equity and Diversity Commissioner of her student government society in undergrad, she is passionate about addressing issues around inequity specifically with regards to gender. As the commissioner of EDI at her university, she was given a platform as a leader who is dedicated to servicing everyone within her program to improve their equity, diversity and inclusivity experience. Using this platform, she created a focus group that was dedicated to collecting student information about their EDI experiences within the program, in order to better inform future policy and initiative development. Throughout her time at Queen’s University she worked as the studentadministration bridge to create regulatory changes to the academic curriculum and policies, based on the recommendations of students whom she interacted with.
Shyla has also been involved with a cardiology lab run by Dr. Adrian Baranchuk for several years. She is apart of the NET-Heart Project, a collaboration of several cardiologists and medical students working to conduct systematic reviews on all neglected tropical diseases and their impact on the heart. The project tied in seamlessly with one of Shyla’s strong passions: helping patients with limited access to high quality medical care. She lead the review on Malaria and the Heart, where she created an original algorithm for detecting CV in malaria. Her hope was that the proposed algorithm would help to prevent progression into severe malaria and lower the risk of permanent injury or fatality, by detecting earlier signs and symptoms of potential CV complications. She was first author on this State-of-The-Art Review published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Shyla was a recipient of the Have a Heart Bursary for the Canadian Cardiovascular Society in 2022. She has published several articles and presented at International Meetings.
